ABOUT ME

I am currently a third-year student at Bangor University, studying BSc Product Design. On the course, we learn all about Innovation, Business, CAD design and Digital Graphics, which will all help me to be a future designer. I have a passion for sustainability and the circular design, therefore on my last year project, I will focus on the social and environmental challenges the farming community are facing in the ever-changing world. My Welsh agricultural heritage has taught me all about the importance of protecting our surroundings and providing the best products for the nation. Feeling and seeing the challenges the farming community are facing myself, led me to think that there could be a greater system in place to protect the farmers and provide natural and eco-friendly alternatives to the world.

Working with live companies over the last 2 years has developed my knowledge of Design and how company structures and theories work in practice. In the first year as a student, I attended an 8-week work placement with Plastecowood, Bodelwyddan. The company focuses on reducing plastic waste pollution in a profitable way. They believe in reducing the carbon footprint by working with councils across the UK. On the work placement, I learned about the whole manufacturing process by also working on orders for clients and learning about sustainability, this was my first experience learning about circular economy and closed-loop processes.

For my second-year work experience, I attended The Tinsmiths, Abergele (previously called Kate Hamilton-Hunter Studio). Their mission and purpose are to upcycle and repurpose metals such as tin and aluminium into beautiful jewellery, sustainably handmade in the UK by a small team of jewellery makers. I gained many skills during this placement as I attended the SpringFair with the owners to discuss the jewellery market, learnt the process of jewellery making and made orders for clients, I also got to experience a stockist meeting to discuss the collections available and to pick out what designs they wanted to sell. These experiences boosted my confidence and my knowledge of circular design and sustainability.

For my last year as a BSc student, I hope to gain further experiences working with companies through my third-year project. As it is unsure if we will have a work placement this year, I will find different ways to gain experience working with companies, through virtual meetings, email, phone calls and other communications. For my third-year project, I  aim to push the boundaries of design by creating a new home furnishing line of products using an unfamiliar material in the current industry, Wool. I aim to use the sustainable by-product in collaboration with other materials to create a truly innovative design that will become a ‘must-have’ in a home. I aim to give back to the suppliers of wool by giving fairer prices for their renewable by-product.
